Manchester United have decided against sending defender Brandon Williams out on loan this month, according to reports. The 20-year-old has been linked with a temporary move away from Old Trafford in order to play more first-team football, but is said to remain part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer‘s plans for now.
Williams has played just once in the Premier League so far this season, coming on as a late substitute during United’s victory over Southampton in November.
His lack of recent involvement sparked rumours that he could be set to join another top-flight club on a temporary basis, with the Saints and Newcastle United among the sides mentioned in connection with the young defender.
Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen have also been tipped to make a January approach for Williams.
However, the Northern Echo has claimed that the Magpies have ended their pursuit after becoming aware of United’s decision to keep hold of their man.
Williams was handed a rare start in United’s FA Cup victory over Watford on Saturday, playing the entire match at right-back.
Solskjaer suggested after the final whistle that the academy product’s future could lie on the right side of defence, despite Williams having been deployed on the opposite flank for much of his short career.
“I thought he had a very good game,” Solskjaer told reporters. “Of course, he’s not played for a while, and he’s playing on the right-hand side.
“We want him to go and be an attacking full-back, and it might be easier for him on the right side.”
The Red Devils are expected to allow Timothy Fosu-Mensah to leave the club this month, which will enable Williams to remain and provide cover for Aaron-Wan Bissaka ahead of United’s involvement in the Europa League knockout stages later in the campaign.
Williams enjoyed an impressive breakthrough campaign last season, playing 36 times in all competitions for the club.
United have already been active in the transfer market, with the 20-time Premier League champions completing the signing of Atalanta starlet Amad Diallo earlier this week.
The Ivorian winger has penned a deal to keep him at Old Trafford until 2025.
Although Williams looks set to stay at the club, Solskjaer has admitted that he is hoping to move two of his team-mates on before the transfer deadline.
The deals of Marcos Rojo and Sergio Romero are set to expire at the end of the season and it was revealed by the United boss on Friday that they will not be offered new terms.
“Both of them have contracts until the summer and they’re not going to be extended,” Solskjaer explained ahead of the Watford clash.
“We’re looking for them to find clubs. Marcos has been given time to go home so he’s still in Argentina. Sergio has been back home as well to see his family but he’s back in England now.
“They are professionals, they are working hard. They are ready if they are called in for us. Of course, Marcos would have to travel and quarantine before [he plays for United again].”
