Arsenal stars Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang have joked about who will get the No 10 shirt once Mesut Ozil‘s impending move to Fenerbahce is complete. Ozil is set to sign a three-an-a-half year contract with the Turkish side after reaching an agreement with Arsenal to terminate his contract.
The move will end Ozil’s seven-and-a-half season stay at the Emirates after he was frozen out by manager Mikel Arteta, who omitted the midfielder from Arsenal’s Premier League and Europa League squads at the start of the season.
Both Ozil and Fenerbahce have posted images on social media of the playmaker jetting to Istanbul to complete his move and the former Germany international will leave behind Arsenal’s iconic No 10 shirt.
The number has been worn by the likes of Dennis Bergkamp, Robin van Persie and, more bizarrely, William Gallas over the years and Lacazette and Aubameyang have already began joking about who will wear the No 10 next.
Lacazette took to Instagram and posted an image of himself and Aubameyang pointing at each other during training above the Spider-Man pointing at Spider-Man meme.
“I’m a Fenerbahce fan. God wanted me to play football in Fenerbahce. I’m proud.
“I am coming tonight with my family to Istanbul, thank God who gave me the opportunity to represent this club. I will wear the shirt with pride.
“Of course, I’m missing a few matches. I haven’t played in a match in a while, but I am physically fit, I have no issues.
“I trained with the team all the time. I missed a few training sessions due to isolation because I’ve been out of the country lately.”
Ozil appears to have announced that he will wear the No 67 for Fenerbahce, with Mbwana Samatta currently wearing No 10.
The number bears significance to Ozil, with the postcode of his hometown of Zonguldak in Turkey beginning with 67.
In a Twitter Q&A, Ozil explain his desire to join Fenerbahce, explaining: “I grew up as a Fenerbahce fan as a kid in Germany.
“Fenerbahce is like Real Madrid in Spain. The biggest club in the country.”
