Arsenal news: Ozil, Rekik and Balogun – four big takeaways from Arteta press conference | Football | Sport

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta addressed a host of topics at his press conference this morning. Arteta spoke to the media ahead of the Gunners’ FA Cup third round tie against Newcastle United on Saturday. Here are four takeaways from what the Spaniard had to say.

Ozil decision ‘next few days’

Arteta confirmed that a decision will be made over the future of Mesut Ozil in the next few days.

Ozil is heavily linked with a move to Turkish club Fenerbahce and MLS side DC United.

On the German, Arteta said: “I don’t know what is going to happen. Obviously now he’s free to negotiate with other clubs.

“We will discuss internally what the best situation for him is for the near future, obviously with the player and the agent too, and try to find the best solution for everyone.

“We will announce it when we possibly can,” Arteta said.

“He’s a young talent we’ve been following for a while that we believe has a bright future, but we will give more details when we can.”

When asked if the announcement will be today, Arteta laughed and responded: “I don’t know, very soon”.

Balogun contract update

Arteta still hopes young striker Folarin Balogun will commit his future to the club.

Balogun, who scored two goals in the Europa League group stage, is out of contract at the end of the season.

“You need three parties to make a deal,” Arteta said of the teenager.

“For sure, the club wants to make a deal, the manager wants to make a deal, the player wants to stay and I’m not sure about the agent.”

Partey time

Thomas Partey could make his comeback from injury for the match against Newcastle.

Partey is back in training and Arteta says the midfielder will continue to be assessed in the next two days.

“Well, we have an extra two training sessions [before the game] and we will assess after that whether he is completely fully ready to participate against Newcastle, or if we’re going to leave it another few days for the Palace game,” Arteta  said.

“He is training really good, he is comfortable, he is not aware of the injury right now and he has done more than what he already did before he played after the injury against Spurs, so he is in a good place, a good mood and you can see the player he is when he is training.”
