Sergio Aguero says Erling Haaland is a great signing for Manchester City and believes he can take the club one step closer to Champions League glory.

Earlier this month, City announced they had agreed a deal in principle with Borussia Dortmund for the Norwegian. Since then, Haaland has been pictured in Manchester enjoying a meal and completing his media duties ahead of the official announcement.

Since breaking through at RB Salzburg, Haaland has already established himself as one of the best forwards in Europe, amassing a staggering 86 goals in 89 games for Dortmund. His goalscoring pedigree is comparable with City’s all-time leading goalscorer, Sergio Agüero, who left the club in 2021 after a decade of incredible service.

Now a global ambassador, the Argentine has been discussing the transfer and what Haaland can bring to City’s already star-studded squad.

“I think it’s a great signing,” Aguero said. “He can contribute towards scoring and that’s big. I hope he racks up a ton of goals. Adapting to the Premier League will take some time for him, but I’m confident he’ll be able to do so well.

“Regarding the Champions League – now that’s a huge task. But football is about the team, not the players by themselves. If the whole team works like it has been, the trophy will be more reachable. I think City has grown in experience over the past few years and it’s something that can be achieved sooner than later.”

City suffered Champions League heartbreak against finalists Real Madrid not long ago. Despite City holding a two-goal advantage, substitute Rodrygo netted twice in added time, with Karim Benzema scoring a penalty in extra time to complete a remarkable comeback at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Supporters bemoaned missed opportunities in the first leg at the Etihad Stadium, with Kevin De Bruyne and Gabriel Jesus putting the Blues 2-0 up within 11 minutes. After such a strong start, City failed to capitalise on further clear-cut chances and only took a slender one-goal lead to the Spanish capital.

Haaland’s clinical nature in front of goal is expected to improve that profligacy, but as Agüero says, it could take some time until he’s fully adapted to England and Guardiola’s methods.
