Manchester City and Liverpool’s dominance is set to continue for the ‘next few years’, according to a Reds legend.

Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp’s teams were involved in a two horse race for the Premier League title this season with City winning by just one point. Coming back from 2-0 down at home to Aston Villa, the Blues managed to score three times in five minutes to deny Liverpool.

Klopp’s team were victorious in the FA and League Cups but their season ended in disappointment following defeat to Real Madrid in last Saturday’s Champions League final. Despite this, Mark Lawrenson believes that City and the Reds are set to dominate football in England for a while longer yet.

Speaking on behalf of 888sport, Lawrenson said: “I don’t see anybody for the next couple of years challenging City or Liverpool. Obviously, Chelsea’s sale has gone through now and Tuchel will be given money to spend and improve on what is already a great squad.

“Spurs and Arsenal still have quite some way to go before they’re anywhere near to Liverpool or Man City. It will take Newcastle a few years obviously to get to the very top.”

City will be strengthened this summer by the arrivals of Erling Haaland Julian Alvarez. The Blues’ chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak promised that other new faces will be arriving at the Etihad in the close season.
