Leeds resigned to losing Kalvin Phillips ahead of Man City approach and more transfer rumours
Sources close to Leeds United sound increasingly resigned to losing Kalvin Phillips this summer amid links with a transfer to Manchester City.
City are on the hunt for a defensive midfielder after losing club captain Fernandinho this summer. The Brazilian only played a bit-part role to the ever-impressive Rodri last term, but Pep Guardiola wants to keep competition for places fierce and sees the England international as a fitting replacement.
Leeds survived the drop on the final day last season, but links regarding Phillips’ exit have persisted right through the close-season and it looks like City will make their approach once the midfielder’s Nations League commitments are over. According to Laurie Whitwell of the Athletic, Leeds chiefs are preparing for his exit.

Elsewhere, AC Milan have joined the race for Gabriel Jesus, as the Manchester City striker continues to be linked with a move away from the Etihad Stadium, according to an emerging report.
With the arrival of Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez at the club, game time in the attacking areas may become limited for certain members of the squad. That means Jesus – alongside the likes of Raheem Sterling and Riyad Mahrez – is now considering what the best next steps are in his career.
All summer, the Brazilian has been linked with a move to Arsenal and a reunion with former City assistant coach, Mikel Arteta. However, their failure to secure Champions League football in the final weeks of the 2021/22 season has thrown a new dimension to his thinking.
Recently, Real Madrid and Chelsea have been included in the mix interested in signing the 25-year-old, but today, AC Milan are the latest side to join the race.
According to 90min, the Rossoneri are monitoring his situation very carefully, with the player expected to make a final decision on his future once he returns from international duty later this month. As well as the club’s strong interest, Jesus was reportedly a fan of AC Milan as a child, mainly owing to his footballing idol, Ronaldo.
Finally, Wolves’ Rayan Aït-Nouri is on City’s radar this summer, with the left-back continuing to impress during his time at Molineux.
However, as Tim Spiers from the Athletic points out, no offers are anticipated from City for the youngster this summer, with the club instead focussing on recruitment in other areas.
Joao Cancelo – who was voted into the PFA Team of the Year last night – has been a revelation at left-back, plus Oleksandr Zincheko has proven himself as an able-deputy on multiple occasions.
