Riyad Mahrez urged Erling Haaland to sign for Manchester City when the pair met on holiday last summer.

Haaland was linked with a transfer last year, but opted to stay at Borussia Dortmund with a view to leaving this summer. City won the race to sign the Norwegian forward, and he was finally unveiled on Monday with all formalities completed.

The 21-year-old has a family connection with City, with his dad captaining the Blues 20 years ago, but it wasn’t just his close circle urging him to swap Dortmund for Manchester, as Haaland revealed the role Mahrez played in convincing him.

At the time the pair were pictured and filmed on holiday last summer, Mahrez joked that he was ‘Agent Mahrez on duty’, before clarifying he was ‘just having fun’.

Now, though, Mahrez has replied to those tweets from almost exactly one year ago to write ‘Or not…’ with eyes emojis and an ‘agent’ emoji.

In Haaland’s first interview as a City player, he outlined what Mahrez had said to him when they met, saying: “He told me to come to City. He was right about that. He said some good things about the club.”

Haaland also confirmed he had pictured himself in City’s team when watching them this season, and backed himself to improve under Pep Guardiola’s coaching.

“I think I can develop a lot on the back of this club,” he said.

“So I think I can get better on a lot of things. I spoke a little bit with him [Guardiola] and we both look forward to working with each other.”
