Inter Miami midfielder Sergio Busquets will miss Thursday’s game against Lionel Messi‘s boyhood club Newell’s Old Boys.

The 35-year-old was forced to exit the Herons’ friendly against Vissel Kobe last week after sustaining an ankle injury from a hard tackle. Miami went on to lose the game, 4-3, in penalties after neither side scored in regulation.

While his injury appeared to be severe at first, manager Tata Martino claims that Busquets will be ready for their season opener against Real Salt Lake on Wednesday. Martino added that the veteran is already cleared to play but they are opting to let him rest.

‘If the league started tomorrow, [Busquets] could play. But he won’t play,’ Martino said of the Newell’s game.

‘We’re saving him and getting him ready for next Wednesday’s match.’

Inter Miami received heavy criticism after Messi no-showed a game against Hong Kong Select

In addition to Busquets’ injury, Inter Miami’s preseason tour has not unfolded in their favor. Like his teammate, Messi also suffered a groin injury and missed a good chunk of the scheduled friendlies.

Messi was limited to second half cameos as they suffered a blowout against Al Nassr and the close loss to Vissel Kobe. Between those games, fans were outraged after Messi no-showed against Hong Kong select.

‘Leo had an inflammation in his adductor in the first game in Saudi Arabia [against Al Hilal],’ Martino said. ‘It wasn’t an injury that required stopping him completely or giving him special medical treatment.

‘It was day-to-day. That’s why he played 10 minutes in the second game [in Saudi Arabia] and why he couldn’t play in Hong Kong.’

While the criticism continued to get louder, fans were refunded for their tickets as the event was largely marketed around the Argentine.

Martino confirmed the Messi will start against the Rosario-based side as they look for the win at home. Inter Miami have lost four of their five preseason fixtures so far ahead of their MLS campaign.
