Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly fearful Ange Postecoglou could decide to leave for Liverpool at the end of the season, after Xabi Alonso was linked with the Bayern Munich job. Alonso has been mooted as a potential Jurgen Klopp replacement, meaning Liverpool may have to look elsewhere if the Spaniard decides to join Bayern.

Postecoglou is less than 12 months into his role at Spurs, but the Australian manager has impressed since taking charge. The 58-year-old made history earlier in the season when he became the first person to win three Premier League Manager of the Month awards in a row, doing so between August and October 2023.

Tottenham currently sit inside the Champions League positions and are fancied to qualify for the competition next season. But if Spurs end up missing out on a spot in the Champions League, it’s suggested Postecoglou might be tempted to leave his post in north London.

According to The Inside Track podcast, Postecoglou is being considered by the Liverpool hierarchy, who could come knocking for the ex-Celtic chief. It’s suggested the lure of Champions League football might be enough to persuade Postecoglou, should Spurs miss out themselves.

If that turns out to be the case, Postecoglou does have an existing relationship with Liverpool, which may end up influencing his decision this summer. The Spurs manager has previously gone on record to say he supported Liverpool when he was a child, suggesting the Reds job could be of interest to him.

“Like any kid, I had the posters up on my wall, so Liverpool was my team,” Postecoglou said in September 2023.

The news linking Postecoglou with the Anfield hot seat comes after a twist with one of Liverpool’s primary managerial replacements, Leverkusen boss Alonso. The Spanish coach has been heavily linked to the soon-to-be vacant Liverpool job, after an impressive stint with Bundesliga outfit Leverkusen.

Leverkusen have enjoyed a stellar season so far, with the unlikely leaders sitting five points clear of record champions Bayern Munich. It’s meant the pressure building on current Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel is continuing to grow, with talk of the German being sacked starting to build.

According to The Times, Bayern are ‘increasingly likely’ to let Tuchel go in the summer, with Alonso believed to be high up their list of possible replacements. If Alonso decides to stay in Germany and take up the role at the Allianz Arena, it could force Liverpool to look at alternative targets, with Postecoglou said to be on their radar.
