Tottenham face Man Utd transfer repeat with ‘priceless’ star | Football | Sport

Tottenham could face a repeat of Manchester United’s £60million purchase of Mason Mount, should Chelsea stand firm in their valuation of target Conor Gallagher. The midfielder, who scored two at Selhurst Park to help the Blues to a 3-1 win on Monday, was hailed ‘priceless’ by manager Mauricio Pochettino after the game.

Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou is a known fan of Gallagher, with the Lilywhites showing keen interest in him over the winter transfer period. The England star has been one of Chelsea’s best players so far this season, captaining the team in Reece James and Ben Chilwell’s absences, and was set an asking price of £60m by the club in January.

With his contract running out in 2025, this value could drop to £50m by the end of the season according to 90min. The 24-year-old is understood to be asking for similar wages to teammate Moises Caicedo, who signed from Brighton & Hove Albion in August for a British-record £115m transfer fee and is believed to be earning around £150,000 per week.

Should Chelsea seek to sell Gallagher, as is their policy to listen to offers for players in the final 18 months of their contracts, this would go against Pochettino’s wishes with the Argentinian keen to hold on to the talent.

“I think he’s a player with great commitment to the team, always trying to compensate every single situation,” Pochettino said of Gallagher following their win against Crystal Palace. “It’s priceless to have a player like him. I’m so happy for him as it’s a victory we needed.”

Pochettino also claimed that Gallagher never showed any intention of leaving the club in the transfer window. He added: “Always he decided, what he said to me was that he wanted to stay at Chelsea. But it’s about him and the club. I am not [worried about] these types of things, he has another year on his contract. But that’s a matter for him and the club.”

Gallagher equalised from a Malo Gusto cross against his former club in the 47th minute, after Jefferson Lerma put the Eagles ahead. He then scored again in stoppage time to put the Blues in front, before Enzo Fernandez added one more for a 3-1 victory.

Gallagher was indispensable during his loan spell at Palace, scoring eight goals in the 2021/22 season.

Chelsea face Manchester City at the Etihad on Saturday, with kick-off at 5.30pm on Sky Sports Premier League.
