Man Utd’s scary XI with four new signings if Dan Ashworth joins from Newcastle | Football | Sport

Manchester United are gearing up for a busy first summer transfer window under Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS’ control over the club’s football operations. The Red Devils’ start of their structural shake-up is a promising indicator that Ratcliffe means business at the dawn of, at 71 years old, the passion project that could define his legacy.

Omar Berrada is already through the door as chief executive. He will officially start this summer once he served gardening leave at Manchester City.

And United have intensified their pursuit of Newcastle United’s Dan Ashworth, who is primed to become sporting director at Old Trafford.

A head of recruitment could follow Ashworth through the arrivals suite before the summer transfer window opens.

While the club will already have transfer targets influenced by Erik ten Hag, INEOS’ new-look set-up will have a significant say once it is in place.

Express Sport takes a look at how United could line up next season with four signings influenced by INEOS and potential new sporting director Ashworth.

Goalkeeper – Onana

Andre Onana was firmly a Ten Hag signing and has far from convinced in his maiden season in English football, despite trailing the lead in the Premier League Golden Glove race by just one clean sheet.

But switching goalkeepers already will be near the bottom of United’s concerns heading into the summer.

Defence – Dalot, Todibo, Branthwaite, Shaw

Diogo Dalot has cemented his status as Ten Hag’s first-choice right-back this season, and Aaron Wan-Bissaka is expected to leave in the summer amid strained contract talks.

Luke Shaw has endured another injury-hit campaign, but similar to Onana, left-back won’t be among the club’s top transfer priorities.

Significant change is coming in central defence, though. Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans are out of contract, while Victor Lindelof faces similar uncertainty to Wan-Bissaka.

United could sign two centre-backs for either side. OGC Nice’s Jean-Clair Todibo seems an obvious choice for the right, given INEOS own the Ligue 1 side.

He has been previously targeted by the Red Devils, with Newcastle also linked last summer as Ashworth weighed up defensive targets.

Jarrad Branthwaite has also been heavily linked with United. The 21-year-old has shone at Everton this term and could arrive as competition for Lisandro Martinez.

Midfield – Neves, Mainoo, Fernandes

Ruben Neves stock may have lowered since leaving European football for Saudi Arabia last summer in a deal worth £47million.

However, the 26-year-old has plenty left to offer and was heavily linked with Newcastle in January before opting to stay at Al Hilal.

He could be tempted with a Premier League return at United, who may be looking to replace Casemiro while not derailing Kobbie Mainoo’s development.

It’s no understatement to say Ten Hag must build his midfield around the 18-year-old amid a sensational breakthrough season. Recruiting a more marquee name – Frenkie de Jong, for example – could risk hampering Mainoo.

Bruno Fernandes, like Casemiro, is the subject of strong interest in Saudi Arabia. However, the United captain is reportedly determined to help guide the club back to the glory days as he enters his thirties.

Attack – Olise, Rashford, Hojlund

Ten Hag has potentially found a settled front three for the next five years in Alejandro Garnacho, Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund.

But attacking arrivals are expected this summer, with Anthony Martial out of contract and Antony continuing to underwhelm. Crystal Palace’s Michael Olise is reportedly a very realistic possibility.

The 22-year-old right-winger is claimed to be one of INEOS’ primary first targets and wants a move to Old Trafford over former club Chelsea.

He could compete with Garnacho, with Rashford and Hojlund continuing to form their partnership across the front line.
