Man Utd’s Champions League charge may be in serious jeopardy after Gary Neville prediction | Football | Sport

Neville made his prediction before United edged out Luton 2-1 at Kenilworth Road last weekend. Two early goals from Rasmus Hojlund put Erik ten Hag’s side in the driver’s seat, but the Hatters came on strong later in the game to set up a nervy finish.

Saturday’s clash with Fulham at Old Trafford was similarly tense, but this time United came out on the wrong side of the result. Harry Maguire looked to have rescued a point for the hosts with an 89th-minute equaliser to cancel out Calvin Bassey’s opener, but Alex Iwobi struck deep into stoppage time to seal a shock result and leave United empty-handed.

Neville was confident about Ten Hag’s chances of overseeing Champions League qualification earlier this month, telling Sky Sports: “They can do it, definitely.”

However, he continued by suggesting six points from six against Luton and the Cottagers would be absolutely vital: “United need six points from these two matches [Luton Town and Fulham]. They can’t make any mistakes in these two games.

“There’s still a long way to go and a lot of work to do. But thinking about what United have got coming forward, and the fact they’ve got a lot of their players fit, there’s a lot more optimism about whether United can finish in the Champions League [spots].

Aston Villa are well-positioned in fourth, while fifth-place Tottenham are three points ahead of United with a game in hand. Things aren’t about to get easier for Ten Hag’s side as they prepare to visit the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

City will have the bit between their teeth not only to get one over on their local rivals, but also to keep pace with Liverpool and the Gunners in the Premier League title race.
