Manchester United may have found their go-to striker for the next decade in Rasmus Hojlund, with Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag suggesting the Premier League ace ‘doesn’t get nervous’. Hojlund is in red-hot form for United, having scored in each of his last six outings for the club.

The latest goals came in a nervy win away to Luton Town on Sunday afternoon, with Hojlund netting twice inside the opening 10 minutes. His first arrived after just 37 seconds, when the Dane rounded goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski to tap home into an empty net, before Hojlund diverted Alejandro Garnacho’s wayward shot goalbound to double United’s lead.

It took his tally for the campaign to an impressive 13 goals across all competitions this term, with the £72 million arrival beginning to find form for the 20-time English champions. Having been forced to wait until his 19th Premier League match for a maiden goal in the competition, since finding the net against Aston Villa in late December, Hojlund has scored seven times in England’s top flight.

Music to the ears of boss ten Hag, who before Hojlund’s recent revival was feeling the pressure after a run of dodgy results. Now, with the Champions League positions in their sights, the United manager has praised the former Atalanta man, not only for his performances but his attitude as well.

“It was one of the things we recruited him on,” Ten Hag said after the Luton win. “We knew he’s a very strong character. Although he was 20, and 21 now, he can really perform under stress. That is one of the big skills you need as a Man United striker.

“He doesn’t get nervous or lose confidence when he’s not scoring. It would’ve helped, for instance, the first game he came in against Arsenal, a 100 per cent penalty he didn’t get. Against Brighton the game after, he scored a goal he didn’t get.

“When you come into a new league, in a new team, at a big club you want to build that confidence quickly. It will help. Once you are in the run, you see it. You see it now he’s scoring, you just know he’s [going to put it] in. That’s the way he is now. He has a lot of confidence and I’m sure he will score even more.”

Thanks in part to Hojlund’s goalscoring form, United are now just five points off fourth-placed Aston Villa. Their quest to finish inside the Champions League spots this season will continue on Saturday, when Fulham make the trip to Old Trafford – a stadium the west Londoners haven’t won at since October 2003.
