Manchester United have reportedly decided they will sign another striker despite Rasmus Hojlund’s red-hot form. The team’s reliance on the in-form Dane was pointed out by Gary Neville months ago, and now United have drawn up plans to bring in another attacker to support him.

Hojlund is arguably the most in-form striker in the Premier League at the moment, scoring six goals in his last five games. A brace from the 21-year-old helped United to a 2-1 win at Kenilworth Road on Sunday, with the team now on a four-game winning streak.

The Dane endured a difficult start to life in the Premier League before this, waiting 14 games for his first goal – a dramatic late winner at Villa Park.

Gary Neville expressed his concern for Hojlund at the start of the season by claiming that United don’t have the players capable of easing the pressure on him. He said: “Manchester United have not had a striker they can hit. Ronaldo was not a classic target man, [Anthony] Martial and [Marcus] Rashford certainly aren’t, but it looks as though he will mess people about. The good thing is that he’s still learning the game.

“He’s only played a couple of seasons at top-level football, but people are expecting him to be an Erling Haaland for Manchester United. They don’t have anyone with experience to help or back him up.

“Martial. We have been watching him for eight or nine years now – and he’s not what [Erik] ten Hag needs or wants. This lad [Hojlund], big price tag on him, it was an encouraging start.”

Neville’s prediction has proven to be right with Ten Hag heavily reliant on the 21-year-old, who has already racked up 30 appearances and established himself as United’s top scorer this season with 13 goals. According to ESPN, United are keen to manage his workload and will look to sign another striker in the summer to prevent him having to play every game.

The Red Devils have already been linked with several strikers, including Joshua Zirkzee, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Serhou Guirassy.

United, meanwhile, are looking like top-four contenders for the first time this season after claiming four consecutive victories. Aston Villa are currently fourth but are only five points ahead of the Red Devils, with Spurs three points ahead in fifth.

Ten Hag was quick to praise Hojlund’s recent performances following the win at Luton. He said: “We are very happy with our recruitment, that recruited the right character because he can perform under stress.

“And when things go against him like in the first half of the season, he has the abilities to be a strong character, to be resilient, to be determined and score goals and that is what we saw when we scouted him.

“Of course, he needed some support because it’s not so easy when you’re so young but, in general, he kept calm and you see his abilities.”

Manchester United take on Fulham at Old Trafford on Saturday, with kick-off at 3pm.
