Manchester City are reportedly eyeing up another of Ralf Rangnick’s transfer recommendations to the Manchester United board, with RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko high on their summer shortlist.

The Austrian national manager spent the second half of the 2021-22 season in charge of United on a caretaker basis before Erik ten Hag was appointed permanent successor to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Rangnick endured a torrid time at United and pulled no punches as he offered his assessment of the state of the club on and off the pitch. He famously said that the United team required ‘open heart surgery’ and recommended no fewer than 10 players to sign.

His suggestions included the likes of Luiz Diaz, Alvaro Morata, Enzo Fernandez and three players who are now plying their trade with United’s city rivals. Erling Haaland, Josko Gvardiol and Julian Alvarez were all named as potential targets who could improve United but the Glazers failed to act on Rangnick’s advice and ended up being beaten to their signatures by City.

Now, according to Bild, City could pinch another player on Rangnick’s list with the Premier League champions and Liverpool watching Sesko ‘closely’ ahead of his £43million release clause becoming active in the summer.

United did attempt to sign Sesko when he was at RB Salzburg but he claimed to have rejected the Red Devils due to their ‘playing style’, instead opting to sign for Leipzig.

The 20-year-old has caught the eye of Pep Guardiola and other managers of top teams across Europe this season with 10 goals in 28 games for the Bundesliga club. The same report claims that Liverpool and Barcelona are also huge admirers and are being tempted by his low release clause, especially considering the Slovenian international’s age and high ceiling.

Sesko would become the sixth player on Rangnick’s list to move to the Premier League if he joined either City or Liverpool this summer with Diaz, Haaland, Gvardiol, Alvarez and Fernandez already having made the jump. Chelsea’s Christopher Nkunku is the other player.

The other two players that Rangnick endorsed were Konrad Laimer and Dusan Vlahovic. United haven’t been linked with either but will be on the lookout for new players in the summer with Sir Jim Ratcliffe keen to bring the glory days back to Old Trafford as soon as possible.

However, Ten Hag has learned that Ratcliffe won’t hand him a large budget because the new United co-owner believes they ‘don’t need a massive rebuild’ and has been ‘impressed’ by the likes of Kobbie Mainoo, Rasmus Hojlund, Alejandro Garnacho and Diogo Dalot.
