Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso is a wanted man. are believed to be keen on their former midfielder replacing at the end of the season, but have also entered the equation, and the Spaniard being lured to Bavaria could have painful knock-on consequences for the Reds.

It’s impossible not to be impressed with Alonso’s managerial exploits as he guides Leverkusen towards what would be a first-ever Bundesliga title. A move to Liverpool looked odds-on for the end of the campaign, when Klopp will leave to embark on a period of rest and recovery.

But Bayern have now thrown a spanner in the works. According to reports, the German giants want Alonso to replace Thomas Tuchel, who has agreed to vacate his post in the summer.

It remains to be seen where Alonso’s preference lies, having turned out for both clubs as a player. Liverpool will hope that he snubs Bayern not only to snap him up for themselves, but also because it could leave a coveted player in the shop window.

The Reds could go after a new midfielder this summer, with Thiago Alcantara poised to depart on a free transfer upon the expiration of his contract. The Spanish international has not featured at all this season due to injuries, but a maestro with his passing ability would be invaluable to whoever takes the reins at Anfield.

Joshua Kimmich fits the mould and he is already understood to be on Liverpool’s radar. Manchester United, Manchester City and Barcelona have also been linked with the 29-year-old, whose future may lie elsewhere as he approaches the final year of his contract.

Such a sequence of events would see Liverpool miss out on their top managerial target as well as a top-class midfielder, all in the space of one summer. Klopp has already made it clear what he thinks of Alonso as he prepares to make way from his spot in the dugout.

“Xabi is doing an incredible job,” said the Reds boss last week. “The next generation is already there and I would say Xabi is a standout in that department… Former world-class player, from a coaching family as well which helps a little, he was like a coach already when he was playing. The football he is playing, the teams he sets up, the transfers he did, it is absolutely exceptional.”
