Chelsea to lose chance to cash in on Conor Gallagher as Tottenham eye ex-Man Utd ace again | Football | Sport

Chelsea could miss out on the chance to sell Conor Gallagher this summer, with Tottenham said to have revived their interest in a former Manchester United starlet. The Blues have been widely tipped to cash in on Gallagher at the end of the season, at which point he will be nearing the final year of his contract.

Chelsea are yet to make any progress in negotiating a new deal for Gallagher, leaving them with a dilemma over whether to sell him in the summer or risk losing him for nothing next year. Tottenham have recently been linked with a potential move for his signature but the north Londoners have reportedly chosen to go in a different direction.

Everton playmaker James Garner has emerged as an alternative target, according to TEAMtalk, with Tottenham said to be keeping a close eye on his development. The report claims that a move at the end of the season is ‘in the works’, two years on from when Spurs missed out on his signature when United were looking to sell him.

Garner’s impressive work ethic would make him an ideal fit for Ange Postecoglou’s style of play, while his versatility is also said to be a major plus point. Tottenham are not the only club with an interest in signing him, though, with several other Premier League sides thought to be weighing up moves of their own.

Tottenham’s interest in Garner would suggest that Gallagher may be overlooked when it comes to boosting their midfield ranks in the summer. However, the report adds that a move for the Chelsea man could still be revisited if he fails to extend his Blues contract by then.

Garner, meanwhile, has been a virtual ever-present for Everton this season having excelled since joining the Toffees from United two years ago. He moved for a relatively modest fee of around £15million but his recent form, coupled with his status as a homegrown player, means that he is likely to command significantly more if he is sold by Everton in the summer.

Sean Dyche recently explained why he has been so impressed with Garner this season, saying: “When I got here he’d been injured. I knew of him from the season before at Forest, I went there quite a bit that season while I was having a rest and he was performing there.

“His adaptability for a young player is very pleasing. I’ve always seen him mainly in a central role but I do like the flexibility of him. He’s a player that can use that wisely and he does. He’s been very open to use it for us and has worked very hard in the positions and he’s growing into what he is, and that’s a very good footballer in my opinion.”
