Chelsea can scupper Liverpool’s reported interest in Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi with a clause to match any bid for the England international. It is claimed that the Reds are eyeing a potential summer move for Guehi ahead of the summer transfer window.

Liverpool will likely invest in defensive reinforcements ahead of the 2024-25 season. Joel Matip’s injury problems have kept him out for most of the campaign and he has a contract that expires in the summer. Meanwhile, Virgil van Dijk will be 33 by the start of the next campaign.

Joe Gomez and Ibrahima Konate are Liverpool’s only other senior centre-back options and the bulk of Gomez’s minutes have come in the full-back positions this season. The emergence of Jarell Quansah, 20, is unlikely to prevent a new defender being signed by Liverpool in the summer.

Guehi has shone since his move from Chelsea to Palace in the summer of 2021. The 23-year-old has developed into one of the Premier League’s most promising defenders and has forged his way into the England set up ahead of Euro 2024.

According to the Daily Telegraph, Liverpool want to sign Guehi in the summer as part of their defensive rebuild. Manchester United are also reportedly monitoring the Palace star’s situation.

Chelsea could hijack any deal, though, due to a clause inserted into Guehi’s contract when he signed for the south Londoners nearly three years ago. The Blues will be notified if an offer is ever made for Guehi, allowing them to match the proposal.

They do not have a buy-back agreement, as they do with several other players, but will also receive a chunk of any figure Palace receive for Guehi in the future. The deal that took the former Swansea loanee to Selhurst Park is believed to have been in the region of £18m.

Palace are understood to want a club-record fee for Guehi to reflect his importance. That record is currently the £50m Man Utd paid for Aaron Wan-Bissaka in the summer of 2019.

It is unclear if Chelsea would move for Guehi in the summer or settle for any money received in a sell-on. The west Londoners have spent heavily on defenders in recent years and harbour a wealth of options at centre-back.

Thiago Silva, Benoit Badiashile, Axel Disasi, Levi Colwill, Trevoh Chalobah, Wesley Fofana and Alfie Gilchrist can all play in the position.
