Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta will be delighted with Edu’s transfer plans for the summer window after the Gunners director offered an insight into his thinking on Saturday. The Gunners remain firmly in the hunt to win this season’s Premier League title, but it is clear that further squad improvements will be needed when the bidding opens later this year.

There have been growing calls for Arsenal to sign a new striker, with the north Londoners having lacked a cutting edge in attack on more than a few occasions this season. However, things have improved in recent weeks with Arsenal scoring 25 goals in their last six Premier League games.

Edu suggested before kick-off against Newcastle on Saturday that Arsenal may not need to target a striker at the end of the season, telling TNT Sports: “I understand why the fans are asking for [a striker] but we already have our targets planned. We know what we’re going to face.

“I’d be worried if we weren’t scoring goals or creating chances but we are doing that right now. The plan is to try and get better every year. We are at a good moment right now and so it’s about improving step-by-step.”

Arteta will be hoping for Edu to stay true to his word when it comes to bringing in summer reinforcements, with Arsenal likely to be hunting players in a variety of different positions. They have been widely tipped to strengthen their midfield ranks amid Thomas Partey’s injury problems and it has been suggested that Arteta could decide to raid the Spanish market for his replacement.

Real Sociedad ace Martin Zubimendi is known to be a player of interest to the Gunners, who tried to sign him in the middle of last season but to no avail. The 25-year-old is primarily deployed as a holding midfielder, operating as a deep-lying playmaker when in possession, while he is also a competent defensive asset without the ball.

The likes of Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz and Amadou Onana of Everton have also been linked with Arsenal as of late, but it remains to be seen which direction they will go in when the transfer window reopens. Arteta could also decide to target at least one new defender, with Bayern Munich star Matthijs de Ligt having been mentioned in connection with a move back in January.

Arsenal explored the possibility of signing De Ligt last month but the financial aspects of a deal ultimately made it a non-starter, according to The Athletic. However, this could be subject to change at the end of the season, at which point Bayern may be more open to selling the Dutchman with plenty of time to find a suitable replacement.
