Arsenal sporting director Edu has offered an insight into his summer transfer plans by revealing that several of the club’s targets have already been identified. The Gunners remain in the fight to win this season’s Premier League title but it is clear there is still plenty of room for improvement in Mikel Arteta’s squad.

Arsenal have been crying out for a prolific striker to lead the line, having lacked a cutting edge in attack on more than a few occasions this season. Gunners legend Ian Wright was clear in his demands to his former side back in January as he took to X, formerly Twitter, posting: “We need a killer.”

Speaking on TNT Sports before Arsenal’s game against Newcastle on Saturday night, Edu acknowledged calls to sign a new striker in the summer but explained that targets have already been planned with the aim of improving the squad as a whole.

“There are a lot of things to do but of course, we’re learning [what we need] ahead of the summer,” he said. “I understand why the fans are asking for [a striker] but we already have our targets planned, we know what we’re going to face.

“I’d be worried if we weren’t scoring goals or creating chances but we are doing that right now. The plan is to try and get better every year, we’re at a good moment right now and so it’s about improving step-by-step.”

Edu went on to reflect on Arsenal’s progress over the last few years, having emerged from the ‘strange situation’ they found themselves in before Mikel Arteta’s appointment in 2021.

“I think we are exactly where we should be, to be fair,” added Edu. “If you remember three years ago, we were in a quite strange situation compared to where the club always aimed to be.

“Now, we’re back in the Champions League, reconnecting with the fans and it’s how the club should be, facing moments to be running for titles, pushing forward so that’s what we’re trying to plan for. At the moment though, I think we’re where we should be.”

Quizzed further on his transfer ambitions, Edu insisted that he will only target players with the right attitude and those who are prepared to demonstrate their commitment to the club.

“I think what we’re looking at now, and what we have at the club already, are players that will want to be committed to the club because that’s very, very important,” he explained. “We need to transmit to the fans, transmit to the people our commitment.

“Sometimes you can lose games, sometimes you win games because that’s part of the sport but we need to transmit what we need to transmit, play the best football on the pitch as possible and try to show the passion that we have for the club and try and move forward as much as we can.”
