Haaland played the full 90 minutes of City’s 3-1 victory over Copenhagen. It is unclear if he was aware of the news before he took to the pitch in Denmark.

Rasdal had three children – including the former City, Nottingham Forest and Leeds player Alf-Inge – with partner Astor Haaland. The 80-year-old died peacefully at Sivdaheimen nursing home, Norway, and will be laid to rest this week.

A family obituary published in the Norwegian press read: “Our dear mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, grandmother and great-grandmother Tone Rasdal died peacefully today, aged 80.”

Midfielder Rodri was granted permission by City to fly to Madrid to be alongside his family following the death of his grandmother in January. He returned to England a few days later and was an unused substitute in his side’s 5-0 FA Cup triumph over Huddersfield.

Haaland failed to find the net in City’s European last-16 first-leg win over Copenhagen. Goals from Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva and Phil Foden ensured the reigning champions took a strong advantage back home for the second leg.

Pep Guardiola reflected afterwards: “I know how difficult it is. When people think it is easy, that makes it easy but it is not. Ask Bayern Munich and Galatasaray and Manchester United how hard it is. They are a really tough opponent. We played really good.

“My job is to warn the players and tell them the attributes we will need and they proved it and felt it. We behaved with the correct personality and patience and everyone was at top, top level.”

Haaland scored his first Premier League goals since November in Sunday’s 2-0 win against Everton. The 23-year-old missed five top-flight games from December to January due to a foot injury and had gone two games without a goal prior to facing the Toffees.

He struck a late brace in the match, keeping City within touching distance of league leaders Liverpool. Despite his injury problems, Haaland has still scored 21 goals across all competitions this season and is the leading marksman in the Premier League with 16. Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah trails by two strikes.
