German football reporter Christian Falk claims the number represents the town where Ozil’s grandparents are from.
Falk tweeted: “Mesut Özil will get the number 67 at @Fenerbahce.
“The number refers to Zonguldak, the town of his grandparents.”
On Sunday, quotes from Ozil emerged ahead of the completion of his transfer.
“I am very excited. I said it in my speeches. I’m from Fenerbahce. I’m so happy,” Ozil is reported as saying by Turkish football journalist Ekrem Konur.
“I see you when I come, Ridvan Hocam. Thank God it was Fenerbahce. I am very happy. As a Fenerbahceli, God has given him the right to wear that jersey. I will wear the Fenerbahce jersey with pride!
