Arsenal transfer news: Ivan Toney making impression on Gunners recruitment team | Football | Sport

Ivan Toney has attracted admirers at Arsenal, who are now set to keep a watchful eye over the Brentford frontman. The 24-year-old lashed in 24 goals last season for Peterborough in League One before completing his £5million move to the Bees, in a deal that could still rise to £10m in add-ons.

Last summer, Toney was tasked with replacing the 2019/20 Championship Player of the Season in Ollie Watkins, who completed a £28m Premier League switch to Aston Villa after finding the net 26 times en route to the play-off final.

Brentford’s data-driven recruitment strategy has proved successful once again and Toney already has 16 goals to his name in the Championship from just 22 matches.

Express Sport understands that Arsenal are among his admirers with the Gunners set to continue tracking his performances.

Mikel Arteta’s side, who are already working with limited funds, are not shopping for a striker as things stand.

West Ham are reportedly considering Toney as a potential replacement for Sebastien Haller following his £22m move to Ajax but Brentford will not entertain offers for their star man this month, as he is deemed integral to their promotion push.

The forward is out to prove he has what it takes to play in the Premier League after he was sold by Newcastle in 2018.

Toney made just two appearances for the Magpies after being snapped up from Northampton in 2015.

He would spend time on loan at Barnsley, Shrewsbury, Scunthorpe and Wigan before eventually joining Posh in 2018.

Tottenham recently had their hands full trying to contain him in the Carabao Cup semi-final, despite running out 2-0 winners over Thomas Frank’s side.

The striker thought he’d equalised for Brentford being the goal was ruled out for offside.

Bees boss Frank is optimistic that Toney’s desire to prove Newcastle wrong can fire Brentford into the top-flight.

“I think Ivan has an inner drive and determination to reach the highest possible level,” the Dane said. “There’s always a situation in all of our careers that inspired us or is irritating us enough to make us work hard every day to try to prove some people wrong.

“I know that Ivan has big ambitions and of course he would like to prove that he could have played in the Premier League.”
