Arsenal announced on Wednesday they had terminated the contract of defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos. Sokratis receives the same treatment as Mesut Ozil, though the Gunners are yet to formally announce the attacking midfielder’s departure. Mikel Arteta is keen to continue trimming his squad and Express Sport looks at five other players who could soon leave the club.
Runar Alex Runarsson
Goalkeeper Runarsson only joined Arsenal in the summer but could be sent out on loan as early as this month.
The Iceland international had a couple of shaky performances in the Europa League before an embarrassing error in the Carabao Cup quarter-final defeat to Manchester City.
Arteta has confirmed that he is in the market for a backup to No 1 Bernd Leno.
If Arsenal do manage to bring in a keeper, then Runarsson could then leave on loan for the remainder of the campaign.
Maitland-Niles started the 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace last week, his first start in the Premier League since December 19.
However, he was dropped out of the squad altogether for the visit of Newcastle on Saturday, with no injury problem.
Maitland-Niles wants to play more and push his case for a spot in Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2020 squad.
The 23-year-old still has over two years left on his contract though so Arsenal would demand a substantial fee for him.
