Arsenal transfer target Pau Torres has been given the endorsement of former Gunners boss Unai Emery who believes the centre-back is unlike any he has ever seen. Torres currently plays under Emery at Villareal.
Torres has emerged as a transfer target for Arsenal in recent months.
The centre-back has shot to stardom in La Liga after a series of impressive performances for Villareal.
The 24-year-old is under contract until 2024, but has been tipped to move to a European powerhouse in the summer.
Torres came through the academy at Villareal having signed as a youngster, but only broke into the first-team last season.
A loan to second division side Malaga proved to be a fruitful move for the Spaniard, as he played in all-but four of their league games.
And when he returned to Villareal, he was ready for first-team opportunities, and played every league game he was available for last season – missing out three times due to injuries and a suspension.
Torres is left-footed, and plays exclusively as a centre-back.
He has a fair amount of speed and an eye for a pass, making him a good fit for Arsenal’s system of playing out of the back.
His height is also an attractive attribute, as he is tough to compete with in the air.
It is believed that Arsenal want to partner him up with Gabriel Magalhaes, or, in the future, in a three-man central defensive unit with Magalhaes and William Saliba.
And Emery believes he would be the perfect candidate for Arsenal, as he told Football.London that he is destined for the top.
“Pau Torres is an amazing player – I think he’s top,” he said.
”I’ve been a coach in Sevilla, PSG, Arsenal and I’ve never seen a centre-back like Pau Torres.”
He went on to predict that, despite being his manager, he believes Torres will be at a top club before long.
Emery continued. “I think he’s going to play at the highest level.
“He’s playing now in the national team but he can play in the top teams in Europe very soon.”
