Manchester United fans slammed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after he again snubbed Donny van de Beek for their New Year’s Day win over Aston Villa. The Red Devils went level on points with Premier League leaders Liverpool thanks to a 2-1 victory at Old Trafford – but Van de Beek was left on the bench.
United’s win was their fourth in their last five league games and set up a huge showdown later this month against Jurgen Klopp’s side, who have dropped points in their last two games.
Solskjaer’s side took a first-half lead through Anthony Martial’s header, but they had to work hard for their win with Villa’s Jack Grealish in inspired form in the second half.
He brilliantly set up an equaliser from Bertrand Traore after taking advantage of disarray in United’s defence, but the hosts were back in front within three minutes when Bruno Fernandes fired home a penalty won by Paul Pogba.
Grealish continued to carve out chances, with David de Gea having to make a number of good saves, but the Red Devils held on for a crucial victory.
But fans were perplexed that there was no sign of Van de Beek – with Solskjaer making a late attacking substitution when he brought on Dan James for Fernandes.
Others speculated that either Solskjaer didn’t want United to sign Van de Beek or the first place, or that there was an issue between manager and player.
“What does Ole have against Van De Beek ffs!” asked one, while another said: “Ole really doesn’t rate van de Beek
“Wah did van de beek do to ole?? Need some explanation rn. #MUNAVL” wrote another.
“There’s something definitely going on with Ole and Donny Van de beek,” one fan tweeted.
Another said: “There is no way Ole wanted van de Beek in Manchester united #MUFC.”
One fan perhaps summed it up, saying: “They need to free Donny man #MUNAVL.”
