Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gives judgement on Donny van de Beek’s Liverpool display | Football | Sport

United have seen Van de Beek struggle to make his mark at Old Trafford ever since his £40million move from Ajax back in the summer.

But the 23-year-old was unleashed from the start against Liverpool in Sunday’s FA Cup showdown.

Van de Beek didn’t really sparkle for United, being substituted for Fernandes – who went on to score the winner with a terrific free kick.

But Solskjaer has praised the midfielder nonetheless, saying: “You could see his cleverness and movement, how efficient he is with the ball.

“He was mentally prepared for this game a few days ago, felt he’d done his job when we took him off and Bruno can come on and do his bit.

“Was a good shift and very happy with him.”

On the performance, Solskjaer said: “It’s fantastic to win games over last year’s champions, a fantastic team.

“Had a few results in last couple of years playing different systems. This time we played on our terms as well, found a way the players believe in and we are getting stronger and stronger, the mentality to come back after being 1-0 down, and physically we are stronger and stronger too.

“We last the games more.”

Mason Greenwood was on target for United, with the England international ending a run of 10 games without a goal.

It was the Greenwood who chalked off Mohamed Salah’s opener, striking past Alisson Becker despite Andy Robertson appearing to scream in his ear.

And Solskjaer was delighted for the 19-year-old, saying: “Marcus and Mason’s position today was a little bit wider than normal, we know that if you are too condensed and let them defend narrow they will win the ball off you and counter attack off you very quickly.

“Two very good goals.

“Mason first composed himself well, let the ball bounce and finished it, same for Marcus, he had to wait for it but slotted it really nicely. Very pleased for them two of them.”

Solskjaer isn’t getting carried away with United’s recent winning run, insisting he’s now set his sights on Wednesday’s showdown with Sheffield United.

“Well, definitely in the dressing room there is a great atmosphere, I will answer you that one on Wednesday night,” he said.

“Seriously, I want to see the reaction, how we can now mentally go again against Sheffield United.

“That’s the challenge now. We have beaten Liverpool, everyone is elated, everyone is really high, very happy and they should be but tomorrow morning I want to see players thinking about Wednesday, not what happened today.”

Meanwhile, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has called for calm after the defeat.

“There was a lot of good things and some mistakes around the goals. If you want to win here you have to be absolutely top and we were not,” he said.

“For the first goal we had no protection, we wanted it too much. Things like this should not happen but they can happen. We had too many players in a receiving position.

“We can take things out of this game, we try to learn from every game. It’s good for Mo Salah, good for the confidence.

“It was a tough game. We want it hard but tonight it was not enough.

“If you win a game there are negatives, if you lose a game too but I saw the boys really, really wanted it.

“We had problems on the counter-attack, it was intense, but there were positives.”
