Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk is injured for the rest of the season while Joel Matip and Joe Gomez are also out. A new defender has been touted to arrive in January to help Jurgen Klopp in his bid to defend the Premier League title.
Liverpool have been tipped to sign a reliable defender to come and help Klopp out until the end of the season.
The Reds are looking to defend their Premier League crown after winning it with ease last campaign.
But they will have to do so without their main man at the back after Van Dijk was injured early in the season and ruled out for the year.
To make matters worse, Gomez was sidelined on a long-term basis soon after while Matip’s fitness has always been a problem.
Fabinho has performed brilliantly in Van Dijk’s absence but former Premier League right-back Alan Hutton has told Liverpool chief Michael Edwards to splash out on a new defender.
“I don’t think if you’re going to challenge for the title you can rely on young boys,” Hutton told Football Insider.
“It’s good for them to come in and get experience but you need a main figure there.
“Fabinho’s does well at centre-back but I do think it’s a position where they’ll look to bring someone in to steady the ship, who can play most their games.
“Not necessarily a Van Dijk but someone who could come in and steady the ship and play most of the games until the big boys are back.
“Somebody you know is gonna come in and perform and be fit and probably ‘reliable’ is the key word.”
There have been a number of players linked with a switch to Anfield, including Brighton star Ben White, Schalke ace Ozan Kabak and Lille’s Sven Botman.
But it remains to be seen whether or not Klopp will be given funds to use in January with Liverpool top of the Premier League.
They are level on points with Manchester United after 16 matches as they prepare to take on Southampton tonight at St. Mary’s.
There are just four points between first and sixth in one of the tightest Premier League races in recent memory.
