Riyad Mahrez sends Pep Guardiola wild and other moments you may have missed vs Real Madrid
Fans boo Champions League anthem
It has become a tradition for Manchester City fans to make their feelings on UEFA known. Their boos have become a signature part of a City Champions League night and in front of a raucous home crowd the jeers were as strong as ever.
As both sides’ elite stars lined up in Manchester, the fans unleashed a deafening amount of noise to drown out the Champions League anthem even for those watching at home. Real Madrid’s players would have probably had the boos still ringing in their ears as the Blues went 2-0 up.
De Bruyne breaks Champions League record
Kevin De Bruyne started like a house on fire at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday night and caught the away side cold in the early stages of their Champions League tie. His diving header from a Riyad Mahrez cross was the ideal start for the Blues.
His goal within two minutes of the start of the game is the quickest Champions League semi-final goal ever and what a header it was.
Pep Guardiola’s team were roared on by the crowd at the Etihad Stadium. Real Madrid returned over 1000 tickets to the Manchester club ahead of the game.
If you were watching on TV you would have been mistaken for thinking that it was a 100 per cent pro-City crowd. However, the Real faithful were housed in the top tier of the stadium, firmly out of sight.
Guardiola’s heartfelt message to fans
Speaking of the City supporters, Guardiola was full of praise for them in the matchday programme. Addressing the fans, he said: “You have been amazing, and it really helps.
“The players feel it and are inspired by you, so thank you. Stay with us because it could be an exciting few weeks.”
Mahrez sends Guardiola crazy
In the early stages of the Champions League tie, Riyad Mahrez was sent through on goal with the Blues 2-0 up. Instead of crossing to the unmarked Phil Foden, Mahrez decided to shoot and missed the target.
Guardiola must have known what was coming from Real as he unleashed a furious response to Mahrez’s missed chance. He charged up the touchline criticising his forward.
