No other player in Manchester City’s squad has contributed to the team’s goals as much as Riyad Mahrez has with the Algerian winger having 31 goal involvements to his name.

Mahrez has been a key figure throughout the season with these goal involvements help fire City to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals as well as sending them top of the Premier League, ahead of challengers Liverpool by a solitary point with six games remaining.

The scenario was no different in City’s emphatic 3-0 victory over Brighton last night at the Etihad Stadium. City knew heading into the match that only a win would help them reclaim the top spot from Liverpool, who had gone first the night before and hammered Manchester United 4-0.

Proceedings at the Etihad started off in a frustrating manner as City were unable to find a breakthrough in the first half, heading into the tunnel goalless after referee Mike Dean’s halftime whistle. Yet this all changed in the second half.

Three vital goals from Mahrez, Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva secured the win. Mahrez also secured the assist for Foden’s long-range strike, taking the Algerian’s goal involvements to 31 for all competitions this campaign.

There is no doubt that Mahrez has helped place City top of the pile domestically as well as secure their place in Europe’s final four with the winger also being the club’s overall top scorer this season with 23 goals. But how does this fine individual compare with others for City players past and present?

If the Algerian star is to secure the most goal involvements for a City player in the Premier League era, he will have to attain over 12 more to beat Sergio Aguero’s record of 42 involvements in both the 2011/12 and 2018/19 seasons. The Argentinian scored a whopping 32 goals that season to earn the honour and has contributed heavily to other seasons with the former striker notching 41 goals involvements in the 2014/15 season, the same season that he won the Premier League Golden Boot award.

Mahrez’s current City teammate Raheem Sterling also has as many as 42 goal involvements, a feat which he achieved in City’s domestic treble-winning side of 2018/19. Sterling also notched 41 in 2019/20 and 40 in 2017/18, highlighting the English international’s importance for City in recent seasons.

Kevin De Bruyne also has a season with ridiculously-high goal involvements for City, securing 39 in the 2019/20 season in which the Belgian midfielder won the PFA Player of the Year Award as well as securing the Premier League Playmaker of the Season award for his impressive 20 league assists.

Mahrez has a tough job on his hands to top such high previous totals but should the Algerian succeed, one would imagine that the club will finish with both the Premier League and Champions League trophies come the end of May.
