Portsmouth manager Danny Cowley has described the decision to leave on-loan Manchester City goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu out of the League One Team of the Season as “ridiculous.”

The Irishman, who joined Portsmouth on a season-long loan deal from City last summer, was omitted from the team that was announced at Sunday evening’s EFL awards. Bazunu has been excellent for Pompey this season and has made a real name for himself.

Instead, however, Plymouth Argyle shot-stopper Michael Cooper was preferred between the sticks. Cooper has kept 18 clean sheets in League One this season, while Bazunu has kept 16.

Despite Cooper justifying his inclusion in the Team of the Season, Cowley has blasted the decision. Bazunu also missed out on winning the League One Young Player of the Season award, with Fleetwood Town’s Paddy Lane crowned the winner.

Cowley, as quoted by The News, said: “I don’t know who makes those decisions. How?

“Just tell me how he didn’t get in the team? Whoever picks it, I don’t know, it is one of the most ridiculous decisions ever.”

The Portsmouth boss has waxed lyrical about Bazunu throughout the season, with the 20-year-old having gone from strength-to-strength since joining the Fratton Park club last summer. He has become the Republic of Ireland’s first choice goalkeeper as a result of his performances for Portsmouth.

“He’s exceptional,”Cowley said earlier this month. “I have spoken about him many times and I normally don’t speak about the young ones, because I don’t like them to get too ahead of themselves — but he’s got such an unbelievable mindset that it doesn’t matter that I speak well of him because he will always want better.

“He was brilliant on Tuesday [against Bolton Wanderers] and he will stick pick faults in it and things he can do. He’s sitting next door with Nicky [Cowley] and Michael Poke [goalkeeper coach] now looking at Cheltenham’s build and where he can find the free man and exploit the space.”
