Ange Postecoglou’s overhaul at Tottenham could continue this summer with the signing of a young star from Real Madrid. But ironically, it’s an Arsenal star who Arda Guler could soon follow in the footsteps of if he is to arrive in the Premier League.
Last summer, Turkish international Arda Guler moved to the Bernabeu in a £17million deal from Fenerbahce. But with Jude Bellingham in front of him, the midfielder has since struggled for game time under Carlo Ancelotti, making just two La Liga appearances.
According to Spanish publication Sport, Tottenham and Bayer Leverkusen have already registered their interest in reigniting the career of the 18-year-old. However, the Spanish giants will only initially listen to offers of a loan deal in a bid to let Guler develop before deciding on his long-term future, similar to what they did with Odegaard.
Guler can be deemed to have been unlucky at Real so far. He was ruled out with injury for the early part of the 2023/24 campaign, and by the time his rehabilitation was complete Ancelotti’s side were already firmly established in the title race.
But he could now be in line for a similar career path taken by Martin Odegaard, currently club captain of the Gunners and deemed pivotal to their Premier League title challenge. He joined Real in 2016 at the age of just 16, but made 11 first-team appearances in seven-and-a-half years amid loan spells in Holland and Spain, and then North London.
After impressing Mikel Arteta in the 2020/21 campaign, the Norwegian midfielder was then signed for an initial £30million fee. It meant a sizeable profit for Florentino Perez and co, having signed him from Stromsgodset for less than £3million.
Odegaard, 25, is now considered a prominent performer in the top-flight, and was selected in the PFA Premier League team of the Year last season. That followed him being named Arsenal Player of the Year in 2022/23.
Whether Guler would command a regular starting place under Postecoglou is also up for the debate with the likes of James Maddison and Pape Sarr among the side’s best performers this season. But the Aussie boss has had to deal with a string of injuries this season and would welcome extra quality options in his squad.
Guler already has four international caps, making his debut in a friendly against Czech Republic in November 2022. And he harboured attention in June the following year, scoring in a 2-0 win in a Euro 2024 qualifier against Wales.
