Scott McTominay was quick to praise the “immense” performances of Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane as Manchester United snatched all three points at Aston Villa. The home side dominated for large spells and recorded more shots and shots on target.

Rasmus Hojlund turned in United’s first goal after Harry Maguire’s header fell into his path in the 17th minute. Douglas Luiz equalised midway through the second half before McTominay came off the bench to power in a header from Diogo Dalot’s cross.

And the Scot felt he needed to praise the Red Devils’ central defensive pairing for withstanding the Villa barrage.

He said: “We started really well, but they are a really good team and came back into it and caused us problems. The guys at the back were immense, particularly Harry [Maguire] and Raphael [Varane]. It was a top-level performance and a deserved win in the end.

“I feel like as long as I’m fit and healthy I can come onto the pitch and perform. I don’t take it personally, I just want to come in and try and do the best I can for this. Long may it continue.

“It was an unbelievable cross to be fair, whipped with a lot of pace. I just needed it to hit my head and get it on target. Full credit to the boys, we created a lot of good chances which may go unnoticed.

“Every game you win is massive for taking a step forward and confidence for the boys. It is all positive but it is about repeating it and not getting too far ahead of ourselves when we win a few. We’ve got to repeat it now.”

Maguire was named man of the match for his dominant performance at the back. And he returned the compliments to McTominay after the final whistle.

“He [Scott McTominay] is playing a little bit higher up,” Maguire said. “He is a great finisher and we see it every day in training. He can play numerous positions. He has great timing and is a good finisher when he gets on the end of things. He made a big impact and long may it continue.

“We are not where we want to be in the league. It’s been a tough season so we knew we needed to come here and get the three points. We are still not where we want to be and we need to step up. We have got ourselves in a position where we can challenge to go and get in the top four. It is important we stick together and take this club back to where it should be.”
