Man Utd vs Aston Villa marred as star ‘out for rest of season’ with ACL injury | Football | Sport

Aston Villa have suffered a huge blow in their hopes of fending off mounting competition for Champions League qualification, with Boubacar Kamara set to miss the remainder of the season through injury. The club have confirmed that Kamara suffered a “significant knee ligament injury” during Sunday’s 2-1 defeat against top-four rivals Manchester United.

Villa’s chances of a top-five finish – which could be enough for a Champions League spot depending on English success in this season’s European competitions – took a hit with their late loss against United.

Scott McTominay came off the bench to head a late winner past Emiliano Martinez at Villa Park after Douglas Luiz cancelled out Rasmus Hojlund’s first-half opener.

Kamara started alongside Luiz in midfield but was replaced by Moussa Diaby due to a supposed injury in the 65th minute, and Villa have provided an unwelcome update on his condition.

A club statement read: “Aston Villa can confirm Boubacar Kamara has suffered a significant knee ligament injury.

The midfielder sustained the damage during yesterday’s fixture with Manchester United and has subsequently undergone a scan this morning.

“Kamara’s condition will be reviewed ahead of a further consultation with a knee specialist.”
