The 26-year-old has admirers at PSG; that much has been no secret since club chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi confirmed their interest at the end of 2022.

Rashford’s contract was nearing its June 2023 expiry amid the best season of his career to date, in which he scored 30 goals in all competitions.

“He’s another player that is really amazing. And for free? To have Rashford for free, every club would run after him, definitely,” Khelaifi told Sky Sports News in December 2022.

“We’re not hiding it; we spoke before, and [there was] interest, but the moment was not a good moment for both sides. Maybe, summer, why not?

“Today, if he’s a free agent, of course, we can talk to him directly, but we are not going to talk to him now. Let him focus on the World Cup. Then after, in January, hopefully, if we’re interested, we will talk to him.”

Rashford dashed PSG’s hopes of a free transfer last summer by agreeing a bumper new long-term contract at United.

But Mbappe’s impending exit could prompt the Ligue 1 giants to test the water again at the start of a new era at Old Trafford, where Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS are expected to take a ruthless approach.

Rashford has struggled to build on his sensational 2022/23 campaign, registering just five goals and six assists in 29 games this season.

So the prospect of spending his prime years in a fresh environment where he would be expected to lift regular silverware could appeal depending on United’s direction under INEOS.

PSG have already proven they are willing to pay him top dollar to make the switch from his boyhood club, having failed with a formal approach in the summer of 2022.
