Manchester United flop Nick Powell used to eat takeaway pizza ‘every day’ while playing for the Premier League outfit – now he’s struggling for minutes in League Two. Powell is currently on the books at Stockport County, where the midfielder is among the highest earners in the division.

The Crewe Alexandra academy graduate joined Man United as part of a high-profile transfer back in June 2012. Having caught the eye while playing for the Cheshire-based side, the Red Devils splashed a reported £6 million on the teenager’s signature.

Described as an “exceptional talent” by then-United boss Sir Alex Ferguson, big things were expected of Powell, who ultimately failed to live up to the hype. A series of loan moves followed for Powell, who left United for good in 2016 having made just nine senior appearances.

Reflecting on his spell with the three-time European champions, Powell revealed to SPORTbible that one of the problems he faced as a pro footballer was keeping his diet in check.

“I didn’t care about my diet until I was 25,” Powell claimed. “I remember at Crewe, I used to eat McDonald’s after every game because McDonald’s was around the corner.

“When I went to United, I didn’t know how to cook so I used to have Domino’s every day. I’d get to a point in my apartment where, I’m not joking, there’d be 15 boxes of Domino’s stacked up. I’d be standing there like, ‘Oh right, I best put these out in the bin.’

“If you’re that in love with football, and that in love with getting better, you either pay for a chef or learn to cook. I’m the tightest man alive so I’m thinking, ‘I’m not paying someone to cook me some food in my own house.”

After leaving United, Powell embarked on a journeyman career in the EFL. Signing for Wigan Athletic after his Old Trafford stint, the Crewe-born star spent three years with the Latics before moving to Championship side Stoke City in 2019.

The former Premier League winner lasted four years with Stoke, but was released by the Potters at the end of the 2022/23 season. That’s when Stockport came knocking, with the League Two title contenders offering him a three-year deal.

Things haven’t necessarily gone to plan for Powell though, who has struggled to break into the side at Edgeley Park. The ex-United man has played a bit-part role in Dave Challinor’s side, despite Powell taking home one of the biggest salaries in the division.

As per Salary Sport, Powell earns a reported £5,900 per week, making him one of the highest earners in League Two. Stockport are currently in the promotion mix, with the Hatters hoping Powell can find form in the second half of the campaign and inspire them to a top-three finish in League Two.
