Man Utd eye double raid on Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen with talks already held | Football | Sport

Manchester United are weighing up the possibility of raiding Bayer Leverkusen for the services of Jeremie Frimpong and Edmond Tapsoba, according to reports. Both players have been linked with the Red Devils for quite some time, with Erik ten Hag said to be keen on improving his defensive ranks in the summer.

Frimpong and Tapsoba have been instrumental for Leverkusen under the guidance of Xabi Alonso since the Spaniard took charge of the club in 2022. They have not lost a league game all season and took a giant leap towards the title by securing a 3-0 win over Bayern Munich, their closest challengers, on Saturday.

Both players are being closely watched by United ahead of a potential double swoop at the end of the campaign, according to the Manchester Evening News. It is said that Ten Hag is eager to add a centre-back and a right-back to his squad in the summer, with the Dutchman hoping to tighten things up in defence next season.

United reportedly held talks over a move for Frimpong last year, but nothing materialised and he ended up staying in Germany. He was initially sought out at the start of this season but Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s return to form and Diogo Dalot’s contract renewal saw United shelve their plans to snap him up.

Frimpong recently signed a new deal at Leverkusen until the summer of 2028 but is expected to be targeted again when the bidding opens later this year. The Red Devils are set to be in the market for a new right-back, given that Wan-Bissaka is out of contract in 2025 and likely to be sold.

Tapsoba, meanwhile, is also under contract until 2028 after committing his long-term future to Leverkusen last summer. However, it seems United will not be deterred in the race to secure his signature as they look to add a young and athletic central defender to their squad.

A move for Tapsoba will certainly not come on the cheap for United, with Fabrizio Romano revealing in September that Leverkusen are unlikely to consider a sale unless they can recoup a significant transfer fee.

Speaking to CaughtOffside, Romano said: “Edmond Tapsoba has signed a new contract with Bayer Leverkusen after speculation over a move away this summer. This now means that he will be more expensive if any club wants to move for him in 2024.

“Bayer Leverkusen believe he’s a top player and worth more than the reported €40-45million [£34-38m] fee. Honestly, I can’t predict for now if Manchester United will be back in for him. Nothing is decided now for 2024, and so we will see based on this season.”
