Anthony Elanga has opened up on his relationship with Antony after Erik ten Hag offloaded him last summer in favour of the struggling Brazilian. The Manchester United academy graduate joined Nottingham Forest in search of minutes this season, and he has shown Ten Hag what he’s been missing.

Elanga broke into the senior squad during the club’s disastrous 2021/22 season under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick.

However, Ten Hag splashed £85million to bring Antony with him from Ajax, leaving Elanga on the periphery of his squad.

The 21-year-old was limited to just seven starts in all competitions, failing to score and registering just two assists in 26 appearances.

Meanwhile, Antony struggled to find his feet in English football, managing just eight goals and three assists despite playing 44 times.

His woes have leaked into his second season, producing just one goal and one assist – both against Newport County in the FA Cup – in 25 games, 16 of them starts.

Alejandro Garnacho has now replaced him as Ten Hag’s first-choice right-winger, forming a dangerous front three with Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund.

But Elanga has spoken out in support of Antony, heaping praise on the 23-year-old’s quality on the pitch and personality off it and backing him to succeed at Old Trafford.

“Antony is a great player and a beautiful person. We had a lot of contact when I was at United, and we still talk sometimes now,” Elanga explained to SoccerNews.nl.

“I am confident that he will score a lot of goals there. I could already see that during the training sessions.”

He added: “I believe in God, and he told me to go to Nottingham, and Antony is still at United. But he will really be successful there.”

While Antony watches on from the bench, Elanga is thriving at Forest, scoring five times and providing six assists in his first 18 starts for the City Ground outfit.

The Sweden international’s eye-catching exploits have prompted many questions about whether Ten Hag was right to offload him for just £15m last summer, regardless of United’s need for profit in the transfer market.

Elanga got one over on his former employers when Forest defeated a lacklustre United 2-1 at the City Ground in their final fixture of 2023, earning revenge for the Red Devils’ 3-2 comeback win earlier in the campaign.

He will have another chance to prove a point to Ten Hag when United visit again in the FA Cup fifth round later this month.
