“Attack wins you games, defence wins you titles,” Ferguson once remarked. The man who led United to 13 league titles would certainly know.

Arsenal have previously been criticised for their brittle nature. They capitulated at the end of last term, losing their grip on a first title in two decades to City.

But Mikel Arteta’s side have been the league’s sturdiest team this season. Keeping William Saliba fit has been crucial – the Frenchman’s relationship with fellow centre-back Gabriel Magalhaes has blossomed.

Ben White has excelled at right-back, with Arteta losing summer signing Jurrien Timber just weeks into the new campaign. Declan Rice’s arrival has taken Arsenal’s midfield to a new level, providing a balance that allows Martin Odegaard and Kai Havertz to attack.

In Arsenal’s last five matches, they have conceded chances amounting to just 1.7 expected goals (xG). The average xG allowed per game is 1.6, emphasising how Arsenal’s defence has massively outperformed their top-flight rivals.

No team has had a shot worth more than 0.5xG in a league game against Arsenal in 2024. They have conceded a mere 22 times in 25 league outings this season, four less than City and two less than Liverpool.

While the defence has to be outstanding, Ferguson insisted that the attack must also perform to ensure three points are earned on a week-by-week basis. In good news for Arteta, his forwards are enjoying an excellent spell in front of goal.

There were four different scorers in Arsenal’s 5-0 thrashing of Burnley on Saturday. The Gunners have scored 11 goals in two games, with the victory over the Clarets following last weekend’s 6-0 romp at West Ham.
